Knitted Steam Train

We're thrilled to be able to bring you our latest knitting pattern design - a Knitted Steam Train - in the form of an all-new FREE Knitting Pattern, available exclusively here at !

Ever since our original Knitted Flying Scotsman model made the headlines last year, we've had quite a few queries from people looking for a pattern or advice on how to knit their very own model steam train, often for friends or family who've worked within the railway industry themselves.

In response to these requests, we are delighted to present our newly-designed Knitted Steam Train pattern, based loosely on an A1/A3 class steam locomotive. Joined together, the train is approximately 41cm in length and comes complete with its own layer of knitted coal and a pretend firebox in the driver's cab. The complexity of the design means that this pattern is suitable only for experienced knitters, but even if you don't plan on making one, do feel free to take a look at the pattern if you'd like to see how our tiny train came together.

And of course if all this talk of railways has caught your imagination, then may we suggest a visit to the amazing National Railway Museum in York, a truly great day out for all the family. As someone who'd not really given steam engines much thought until I tried to knit one, I've been completely won over by this incredibly inspiring place which I would - and often do - recommend to anyone, whether railway enthusiast or not.

Happy knitting!
